Is rice a vegetable?

We are split over here in Scandinavia. Basically Shiz claims having rice fulfills one portion of his daily "5 portions of fruit and veg" requirement.
I claim rice is not a vegatable.

Please discuss, both here and at the pub on Monday, and post back your answers.

Ta ta for now.

rice can probably replace 1 portion of fruit or veg. But it lacks the vitamins and minerals those other foodstuffs provide. Tho its a great thing to eat if you're losing weight, as it has only a trace of fat and no cholesterol!!!

Anyway, if he wants to argue about something, tell him i'm learning to drive this year, and i've seen a natty 1.8 litre hard top convertible i like!!! only £15000 new! and 2 seater, so HE can't get in!

Rice is not and cannot be classed as a vegetable.

It provides none of the vitamins and minerals found in vegetables.

It is a pulse, in the same catagory as lentils, and if anything falls into the food group carbohydrates.

Thanks people. I am very happy to have been proved right. Again. It seemed to become a common theme whilst on holiday that i was right and Shiz was wrong...
