Bramhall Rangers 3 Eat My Goal 16

I thought I would dispense with the actual report this week, as to be honet I could cut and paste from any number of previous reports and it would read the same.

Instead I am going to try and offer some basic football advice which after 3-4 years of playing I would hope people would be able to put into practice. Remember, this isn't UEFA Pro-Licence stuff, but basic, simple things that should not be beyond 8 guys who play football and have done for 3-4 yrs. Also, I like to think I know a reasonable amount about football and how to play it so it may be worth listening.

In no particular order:

1. Say the name of the person you are passing the ball to, to let them know who it is going to and where it is going eg. "Mark! Down the boards!"

2. Call for the ball if you want it. If a person doesn't call, don't pass it to them...they obviously don't want it eg. "John, square it!"

3. Control the ball with one touch with the inside of your foot. After 4 yrs the ball should not be bouncing up around your hips or three yards away from you.

4. You must pass the ball as soon as you see the opportunity. Do not wait until the last possible minute as the margins for error increase significantly.

5. When you have passed the ball, do not stand still. Move into an area where you can receive the ball back. This isn't to play sexy football, but out of courtesy to your teammate in that they always have an outlet.

6. It is not a mistake/unacceptable to pass the ball backwards and "start again". Often this is the easy and sensible option.

7. Anywhere in the opposition half is fair game for a shot IMO. Yes there are few people on the team who are confident in their shooting, but our goals and decent efforts came from one touch and then shooting last night

8.If you are tired, but need to stay on due to lack of numbers, linger in defence rather than attack. If you can't get back don't go forward. We can try to soak up the pressure until we can make a sub.

9. If the ball goes overhead off the keeper, the boards or the floor it is STILL IN PLAY. We have known this rule for 3-4 years. Play to it.

10. Play to the whistle.

11. If it is there free kick let them worry about fetching the ball, you get into position and on your toes for the free kick.

12. If you aren't going to play in a game, let someone know earlier than half an hour before KO when they drive round to pick you up. It is an appauling expression of disrepect to your teammates and quite frankly just as unforgivable as any of the above.

This is not to say that I do all the above all the time, because I don't. But I like to think I do them 90% of the, and shouldn't be asking too much to ask.

In terms of next weeks game. Another thing I think we maybe need to look at changing is for Belly to have a stint outfield again. We can now regularly have 7-8 players each week so the ability to rotate players more freely will help thouse with poor fitness. Having a more comfortable/confident footballer outfield would benefit the team and hopefully give us more of a cutting edge.

Those are my thoughts, and as I say they are for everyone to work on, myself included.

I hope we can improve next week.

Final Score - Bramhall Rangers 3 Eat My Goal 16
Goals - Mini (2), Jim (1)

Nev goal watch - 41

I just thought it would be interesting to add a couple more facts too.

£2675 - amount of money (not including reg fees) that Rangers players have paid over the season):
Pie - £385*
Peter - £370
Mini - £365
Shiz - £330
Rascle - £265
Mr T - £270
Nev - £220
Belly - 195

Looking at that I believe we owe it to ourselves to pull our fingers out because lets remember we are paying for the priveldge of getting whooped every game, and to be quite frank, it is starting to look like an utter waste of money!

* Based on an aveage of £5 a game.

I would just like to say I agree with all you put Mini. I feel in the past I have improved all the above.

Last night however I would like to apologise for my poor performance. I didn't realise how much my already poor fitness had deteriorated in the time I was away. Something for me to work on, and don't you worry boys I have plans ready to set in motion...

Something I feel I am improving is my shooting. I am getting my shots more accurate and more powerful. Something I have been disappointed about in the past.

I would like to say that Belly was amazaing in goal. Some of his saves were quite frankly nothing short of miraculous at times! If it hadn't been for him we would have been looking at somewhere well into the 20s for goals conceded. Credit also to Nev who was as committed as ever in his defending and tried his hardest up front.

Which does lead me on to another point. No disrespect to Mark or Nev, but we shouldn't be expecting them to lead the line. Let them defend and let the other players in the team more comfortable in attack (last night Mini, Jim and myself) play further up the field. Yes, times will happen when people will move, but if we can please try and swap back again at the earliest opportunity... It gives Belly an outlet to throw the ball to and make sure it sticks up front for more than a couple of seconds instead of coming straight right back...

Last night it was amazing how little anyone was talikng. It is more noticeable when you are off the pitch but it was deadly silent.

I know that I talk, and Jim (despite not knowing anyone very well and calling Nev, Russ all night - he hasn't even played with Russ!!!:p) was very vocal too. Belly also commands well from the back but apart from that noone else talks at all, or so seldom it is not noticeable.

Even just a "Come on guys! Chin up!" would be useful. Waiting for a pass to come to you and it being intercepted before it gets there is a mistake I agree, but no more so that noone on your team shouting "man on" or something similar. Equallys poor play IMO.

Simple things, that are not hard to put right.

I wanted too, and usually I feel my communication was quite good. But last night I was struggling with my fitness (the lack of a second sub meant even if you were off the pitch it was generally only for a very short time).

Hopefully in the future as I get less tired my communication will get better...

So, when we having this training session then to improve on these skills?!

In all seriousness tho, its been said time and time again. Although players have good games, and bad games, a few of us have probably hit our peak! And failing losing a few stone, i dont think we'll get much more out of some of our failing bodies!

"Take responsibility for yourself AND your team mates" is the golden rule. Dont give up, and dont rely on your team mates to do all the work. How many times has an attacker broken through our lines and someone else has had to sprint across to correct someone elses mistake. I wont mention names, i think we've all done it. Stood lazily on the pitch due to fatigue as someone runs past us and scores. It cant be helped when we have no subs. But there's no excuse if we can use quick and regular subbing!

As for my back, its stiff but not painful. But its not going to be ready for thursdays match i'm afraid. REALLY pissing me off as i want to get back into defence with Nev and belly!!!!

Like the approach with the match report. Tips are all commonsense. and I think it's worth reminding people of some of the obvious defnesive ones as well:
1) Marking - unless you are supremely confidence in your defensive ability, you should be within one arms length of the player you are marking in almost all situations.
2) Tracking - Especially needed after the player who you're marking has just passed the ball. They are likely to follow one of Mini's tips and move to an open space.
3)Lagging behind a player your marking is a waste of energy. Regularly I see people "tracking back" 1/2 metre behind the player they're marking. It's very hard to tackle a player from this position if they suddenly get passed the ball. It's very hard to re-act if they suddenly sprint. So really you're wasting your energy. Put the little extra bit of effort in, catch them up, and they'll most likely give up their run and you can rest then.

As for spending £330... oh dear
