Bramhall Rangers 4 Buxton Robins 11

"All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual" - big brained, moustachioed German-Swiss bloke Albert Einstein.

Rangers had 6 for this week’s game. Mr T was supervising some underage drinking, Rascle was still suffering with a dodgy back and usual replacement Jim was deterred by the late KO time. Peter returned to the side after overcoming his bout of girly-ness. The opposition, we were reliably informed by Nev, consisted of a good portion of a team from a school he had previously taught at, and were pretty damn hot. Buxton Robins had made a decent start to the season but had surprisingly been beaten by Cheadle…must have been extenuating circumstances!

They were a very capable side and passed and moved the ball well. Rangers defended resolutely for a large portion of the first half but were un-done on a few occasions by a perfectly thread through ball with dissected the defence and left Belly exposed. After going 1-0 down the Rangers retaliated and equalised through Mini. He dispossessed the defender and with only the keeper to beat, slotted it home. Rangers never lost touch in the first half and despite conceding a few more coped well. Nev was eager to impress his former protégés and was solid at the back. Simple football was the order of the day and was carried out to effect mostly. Not afraid to pass the ball backwards or safely down the line Buxton Robins were frustrated.

Rangers did get another in the first half. Mini and Peter exchanged a fortunate one two and the ball broke to Pie who showed great composure to fire home his first of the season, and 37th for the Rangers. At half time it was 5-2 to the Robins but they clearly felt it should have been more. Belly had performed solidly in the first half, and being ever-present this season has helped him build confidence and get back into the groove. Peter, sporting a very snazzy grey t-shirt was struggling in the final third but was putting his weight around in other areas. Pie was having a much better game than last week which will please him. Shiz was enjoying the running battles and was more often coming out on top, beating the Robins for pace and power.

The second half started with a bang for the Rangers. Straight from KO, Buxton tried to thread a trademark ball through the defence. Mini intercepted the pass and although forced wide managed to squeeze a left footer under the keeper to make it 5-3. Robins were shaken, but during the half there superior skill shone through. Despite some good keeping and blocking they moved into a commanding lead. Peter was able to notch his 3rd of the season after some good closing down. Close to his man from a keeper throw out he pressured the defender into a mistake and finished cutely from a tight angle. Hopefully this will encourage Peter to stick tight and pressure the defenders in the future as it reaps rewards.

All but one of the Rangers goals came from pouncing on opposition mistakes, showing that when were exert pressure it has its benefits. Mini saw a long distance effort ricocheted off the post and numerous well hit shots well saved by the keeper. Nev also cam close when he was allowed to advance with the ball exchanged a pass with Pie and his shot was skewed just wide. Pie himself nearly scored a bizarre goal. A shot deflected off the back boards and then off the keepers head, only to trickle onto the bar and then over.

With 4 minutes to go, Mini subbed on to replace a tired Peter. Within moments he found himself in a shooting position but in winning the ball had managed to damage his glass ankle. Wanting to take the shot he steadied himself but the realisation that he couldn’t led to a slow motion sit on the floor. Limping off it was the last thing of note in the game, unless anything else happened when he wasn’t watching?

The final score was flattering on Buxton Robins who despite being the better side were frustrated by the Rangers chasing and harrying. They were not allowed to play the game they wanted too and probably had to work a little harder than they would have wanted.

Final score – Bramhall Rangers 4 Buxton Robins 11
Goals – Mini (2), Pie (1), Peter (1)

Nev goal watch - 42

I think the defending was fairly solid for most of the game. I only recall two small patches where we lost focus and I think that was largely due to fitness. The average standard was very high though so lots of positivies to take from this game even if the score line doesn't make it look like that. If we'd played like in recent matches it would have been far worse!

Big up the Mini for including the Climate Crisis web link. See the film, well worth it, but even more importantly, do something about it. A famous Chinese proverb by Lao Tzu is "The journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step.", if everyone take one step a year its easily achieveable. It's our generation which will ultimately determine whether the Earth becomes a nightmare to live on.
