Bramhall Rangers 4 Northern Canaries 4
Rain drops keep falling on my head!
It was like playing in the middle of Hurricane Katrina! The wind, the rain and the cold did not make for a pretty game of football, and it was always going to be the most gutsy team, that adapted to the conditions best who would come out on top. In the end the conditions won, neither Rangers nor Northern Canaries taking hold of the game.
For the players, Mini in goal, Shiz, Mr T, Rascle, Pie, Hedderz and Piggy the game was pretty appalling. Control, passing and shooting was near impossible with the rain falling and puddles forming all over the pitch. If anything the elements did level the playing field though!
The first half went really well for the Rangers, Piggy scoring with a lovely deft touch after Shiz had “passed” to him (though we all know it was a miss-hit shot!) deflecting the ball into the bottom corner. This followed his first of the game where he finished with aplomb into the bottom corner. Two very different, but equally important strikers goals!
At the other end, the defence held strong, forcing the Canaries out wide and into the corners. The shots that they did get away we kept at bay by Mini in the sticks, flying through the puddle like a man possessed, punching, parrying and deflecting everything that was thrown at him. Soaked to the bone by a pond in his area, Mini marshalled his defence, though lady luck did shine on him as a ball squirmed under his body only to be clawed away from the line and somehow find itself lodged betwixt his thighs! He was like a multi-limbed beast! (I don’t usually big myself up, but I thought I played quite well!)J
Half time came, and with the heroic defending and goalkeeping and excellent finishing from Piggy, the Rangers went in 2-0 up at the break. It was not necessarily a comfortable, unassailable lead but it was a lead in any case.
The second half promised so much but the first 10 minutes delivered so little for the Rangers. Canaries came out of the blocks quicker and fired two immediate responses, Mini unable to do much with either as they skipped off the wet surface. As usual many of the Rangers looked tired in the second half, which gave the Canaries hope.
Rangers did get back in the lead, as Hedderz finished in typical fashion. With about 10 to go it was 3-2 to Rangers, but the game was end to end and the conditions meant it was anyone’s. With only 5 to go, disaster struck as the Canaries took a 4-3 lead. A goal from after the striker after he had rounded Mini was one. A deflected goal off Rascle eluded Mini and it seemed like an unlikely and undeserved victory would be heading to the yellows.
With minutes to go, heads seemed to drop as more points slipped away. However, in front of the adoring fans (Charlotte) and the subs, Pie found himself free 10 yards out! In his own words “the keeper wasn’t stopping it”, and the equaliser was lashed home with relish! 4-4! Rangers had come back from the brink!
It was a fitting end to the season, a draw between two very evenly matched teams. Hopefully a change in fortunes will see the Rangers pick up more points starting next week, but you know what they say: it’s a funny old game football!
Final Score: Rangers 4 Northern Canaries 4
Goals: Piggy (2), Hedderz (1), Pie (1)
