Getting to East Midlands airport

Had a look at national rail, national express, ryanair and EM Airport.

1. the terrovision coach to Liverpool does not operate to EM Airport leaving Nat Express or train.

2. Nat express would require you to go from Manchester - Leeds - Sheffield - EM and takes about 5 hours and costs £27. Looks very inconvenient.

3. Train costs £30 from Stockport (no railcard)

4. I'm OK cos I can get a 1 way ticket to Loughbrough from Sheffield for £7. For once working in Rotherham comes up trumps!

5. So......for you the best solution so far seems to be get £12.90 train ticket Stockport-Sheffield, then use a cheap day ticket (bought in advance) Sheffield -Loughbrough at £7 and I can meet you in Shef -Lough train.....there's a possibility of getting manchester-Sheffield Nat express and trying to get train from there but they don't connect well and there's a possibility you'll miss the train. And you don't save much.

6.skylink.com show routes from loughbrough stn to EM Airport. There's one at 2220 (best) and one at 0220.

7. Think EM Airport is open 24hrs but can't find much info on that.

  1. Would it be better for the Stockport crew to go via Nottingham? There is a direct train (that passes through Sheffield - we could meet you there Anton?) and according to East Midlands airport website there is a bus link from Nottingham railway station every XX:10 & XX 40 until 23:10 from which it is then every 60 mins. They even claim if you ring up ticket traveline (08457 48 49 50) you can get the bus "add on" to your train ticket.

Is there anything I'm missing about going from Loughborough?

  2. Reading the section on the website (and I will quote it later for you) it suggests the best way to get to EM Airport from Manchester by train is to go to Derby train station, then get an airport shuttle bus from the station to the airport. Apparently there are special tickets that combine the train and bus in one and are cheaper than other ways of getting there.
No details of actual cost or what times the train/bus runs though.

  3. From the East Midlands Airport website:

"Rail connections to and from the North and West
If you’re travelling via Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and York, you can make a connection at Derby railway station using the Derby Airline Shuttle bus.
    "

However the shuttle buses run from Derby, Notts and Luff:

    "Train and bus ‘Add-on’ ticket
If you’re travelling to Derby, Loughborough or Nottingham railway stations, you can connect to the airport bus at a discounted rate by buying a combined train and bus ‘add-on’ ticket from the railway station where your journey begins. ‘Add-on’ tickets can’t be bought online or onboard the train. For fare information, contact National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50.

Now a quick check on the National Rail website gives the latest train we can get from Stockport:

    Dep: Stockport 22.38
    Arr: Notts 00.46
    (Train)

    Dep: Notts 01.10
    Arr: East Midlands Airport 01:55
    (Bus)

Checking the fares this would apparently cost £17.60 for both train and bus, which sounds good value to me. Whether thats an advanced price I don't know...

  4. Yes I have found similar to Johns last post.

Seems like a sensible option and not too expensive. Don't think we need to complicate things.

I reckon if we all look at booking that train mentioned in advance (barring Anton who can get there however) and we wont go far wrong!

  5. Can I suggest we don't leave it as late as 22:38 to leave Stockport if we're relying on the rail network. If the train gets cancelled we'll be in trouble. We could always go to a pub for a pint of two "night cap" at whichever station we end up at before getting the bus to the airport. Also, if we all bring a pack of cards we could build the biggest house of cards ever seen in Nottingham at the airport!

  6. My suggestion was only an initial starter. I was hoping people would find something better which seems to be the case.

Loughbrough was picked only because that was what I did last time I went from EMA. Also for some bizarre reason the wensite indicates it's cheaper to go there than Derby....even though it's further (I suppose you could just get off early)...but trying to figure the logic behind costs is like trying to understand big pete.

My own preference would be to go earlier (i.e. 8pm or so) rather than later. We could then perhaps stop off in Sheff/Derby/Nottingham for a light beverage at a public house on the way. I'll probably have tea in wetherspoons in either Roth or Sheff anyway.

  7. Ok earlier trains:

    Dep Stockport 19.55
    Arr Notts 21.38
    Bus Notts - EMA 22.10

    Dep Stockport 20.55
    Arr Notts 22.36
    Bus Notts - EMA 23.10

Whatever journey we decided it is £17.60 per person.

  8. Sounds like a plan.

Is it best for us to book them individually? I reckon that is the best option myself. Does anyone want to pin down a specific time?

  9. I think we need to decide on a time and then we all book individually. I should be able to get on the same train as you.

  10. According to the website (nationalrail.co.uk i think it was) I can book a block a number of them.

  11. Shiz suggested, and I agreed it sounded like a good idea, was to get a train at 8 or 9pm from Stockport to Nottingham, then get the bus to the airport. The buses run every hour up until 1am, what we thought might be a good idea to break up the journey would be whilst at Nottingham pop into a bar near the station (there are quite a number) for an hour or two and have a couple of beers. Then get a later bus to the airport.

I reckon we should look to book the train tickets soon, so let me have your thoughts. If no-one has any problems with this then tomorrow I will book tickets for 7 of us to get from Stockport to Nottingham on the train departing at 7.55pm (at a cost of £17.60 each). I will book them on my credit card so people don’t have to pay until after pay day.
